CENIC: This month, the 10 Gb/s connection to the San Diego County Office of Education was tested and readied for production traffic. eSchool News: Backed by a campaign launched by First Lady Michelle Obama earlier this year, some schools are using the same technologies that have many kids glued to their cell phones and iPods for hours at a time as useful instructional tools... K12HSN/CDE: Recently the FCC released their new National Broadband Plan. To prevent any unnecessary worries, it seems wise to remind ourselves that the new National Broadband Plan is just a plan. It is not adopted. K12HSN/CDE: Addressing gaps in California's broadband infrastructure requires that we provide accurate and up-to-date information on behalf of CA’s school districts. The California K-12 High Speed Network (K12HSN) is pleased to announce that thousands of Thinkfinity's educational resources are now available on Calaxy. Verizon Thinkfinity is offering an online facilitated course, delivered via Blackboard. This session is intended for educators, technology integration specialists, etc, who are interested in training others to locate and integrate Thinkfinity resources. ISTE: The International Society for Technology in Education completed review of Thinkfinity's Integration Framework and determined that the program clearly supports implementation of the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS*T) Do not miss Gail Desler's coverage of several amazing sessions held at the NECC conference, last week in Washington, DC. eSchool News: Schools and other entities that provide broadband service and technology training can begin applying for $4.7 billion in stimulus funding July 14. eSchool News: Opinions about the management of the federal e-Rate program have improved over the last year, a new survey suggests. But applicants continue to be frustrated by audits, and they'd like to see more transparency in the program. Thinkfinity is offering FREE one-our Educator Webinars every Monday through Friday from June 1 through June 26, plus a Saturday session on June 20. CENIC: A node site previously located at Truckee Donner Public Utility District was moved to Truckee High School, and a DS-3 between Lake Tahoe Unified School District and Truckee High School was replaced with a Gigabit connection. In addition to the five upgraded circuits for California's K-12 System listed in the past issue of CENIC Today, the month of February saw 4 additional circuits upgraded to Gigabit speeds K12HSN: When you receive your Form 471 Receipt Acknowledgment Letter (RAL) from USAC, you have 20 days to respond from the date of the letter, and to make any allowable corrections to any errors that may result in reduction or denial of funding. K12HSN: As we approach the first anniversary of edZone's launch, we have a couple of important announcements. FY 2009 Form 471 Application Window Closes Tomorrow-February 12, 2009. Applications completed online or postmarked after this time and date will be treated as received outside the filing window and stand little (probably no) chance of being funded. We are recruiting 36 teachers from around the state to pilot the resources and the collaboration tools of a new online environment. Selected teachers will work between March 14 and June, 2009, to inform stakeholders in the Brokers of Expertise initiative. CENIC: A very large number of K-12 SONET circuits have been undergoing Gigabit upgrades to improve their connectivity to the CalREN backbone. Working with the K12HSN, the CDE has established the Brokers of Expertise (BoE) initiative to embrace technology and provide effective tools and resources to schools as they strive to reach ambitious goals for student achievement. In September, October, and November 2008, the CDE and K12HSN will conduct four Beginner and four Intermediate/Advanced E-rate/CTF Training sessions throughout the state. During the past months, CENIC has continued to work with K12HSN, K-12 node sites and telecommunications service providers on upgrades to a significant number of SONET circuits, all of which will be migrated to Gigabit connections. Users now have the ability to create groups and share content to those select individuals. The California K-12 High Speed Network has developed a comprehensive set of tools to support teaching and learning in California classrooms. This suite of tools, known as edZone, is available to the California educational community at no cost. The California K-12 High Speed Network is providing comprehensive cybersafety resources to enable parents and teachers to acquire the knowledge they need to keep their children safe on the Internet. The K-12 High Speed Network will launch EdZone at this year's upcoming CUE Conference. EdZone is a customized social networking platform allowing California K-12 educators to take advantage of Web 2.0 technologies in a safe and controlled environment. K12HSN is offering local instances of the Showcase website to all California K-12 schools and districts interested in sharing teacher and student work and disseminating best practices in a safe environment. The deadline for filing Form 471 applications for FY 2008, the next funding year, is Thursday, February 7, 2008 at 11:59 pm EST. Applications completed online or postmarked after this time and date will be treated as received outside the filing window.
