W-Help the students know Where the unit is going and What is expected? Help the teacher know Where

the students are coming from (prior knowledge, interests)?

 

Teacher will read aloud a story that introduces good role models called Fill a Bucket by Carol McCloud and Katherine  Martin, M.A.  (Ferne Press 2008). 

Activate prior knowledge by discussing choices they have made that been challenging or made them feel bad.

H = Hook all students and Hold their interest?

Students will listen to the teacher’s personal stories of character challenging situations.   (Social Studies Standard  2.5 )

E = Equip students, help them Experience the key ideas and Explore the issues?

Vocabulary introduction to:  Trustworthiness, caring, citizenship, respect, responsibility, fairness, and choices.( Social Studies Standard  2.5)

R = Provide opportunities to Rethink and Revise their understandings and work?

Using listen-think-pair-share students will discuss character challenging situations and the correct decision to be made. (Social Studies Standard  2.5)

 

Informal authentic assessment. (Social Studies Standard  2.5, Language Arts Content Standard  2.2)

 

E = Allow students to Evaluate their work and its implications?

 

Students will self-reflect when receiving consequences and decide if they were exhibiting all 6 character traits in focus. (Social Studies Standard  2.5)

T = Be Tailored (personalized) to the different needs, interests and abilities of learners?

Students will write friendly letters to peers, friends, family members, teachers, and  PTA to practice letter writing style and format. (Language Arts Content Standard  2.2)

 

O = Be Organized to maximize initial and sustained engagement as well as effective learning?

 

Students will be introduced to the parts of a friendly letter including the; date, salutation, body, closing, and signature. (Language Arts Content Standard  2.2)

 

Vocabulary introduction to:  Trustworthiness, caring, citizenship, respect, responsibility, fairness, and choices. (Social Studies Standard  2.5)
