Use this novel to integrate language arts and social studies while teaching Medieval Japan. This historial fiction work by Katherine Paterson is set at the end of the Heian Period during the Genpei wars, and includes many of the actual battles of the time as well as details about the Heian court, country life, and the samurai. Patersons literary style is wonderful, and the lessons learned by the protagonist are great fodder for class discussion.
