Orcas off San Diego Coast
Thursday, March 20th, 2008
Okay, I know this post isn't about educational technology, but it does somewhat involve one of my new hobbies which is Scuba diving.
This weekend Bill Lewis was boating off the coast of San Diego when he encountered a pod of Orca whales. There is supposedly an average of 2-3 orca sightings in the San Diego area per year according to Sea World.
It was amazing for me in a couple of ways, having the opportunity to see orcas in their natural environment would be an incredible experience. I have dove in this general area before and the calmness of the water is the other thing that was so incredible. I'm not sure I have ever seen the water so calm. Bill was a lucky man!
Don't get me wrong, I would not want to be diving in this area and be met by killer whales. But seeing them in the wild from a boat would have been a wonderful experience.
The San Diego news station has posted some of Bill's pictures. You can view them here:

You can also read the full story and see a video from the news site at http://www.cbs8.com/features/special_assignment/story.php?id=121515.
They may be considered killer, but from a distance they are amazing.
That's my call and upon futher review, the call stands!
