Frame of Reference asks students to brainstorm all of their associations with a key theme before reading. Students can use a venn diagram or a free write to identify possible associations. Then students share their varied meanings and discuss. This gets everyone thinking and allows for further discussion part way into the text. In such discussions, the class creates their understanding of the text collectively.
