An Ode to Professional Development
Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

If someone had told me that I would be attending a tech conference, much less creating a blog two days into my much anticipated summer vacation, I would have responded, "Huh..." in a very apathetic way. Well, I put on my game face, woke up early, traveled from Fresno to Clovis, searched for a Starbucks, and got ready for the tech conference. I scanned the agenda for the next THREE days and checked off the seminars I wanted to attend. I have always wanted to delve into the work of "blogging," made very chic by celebrities, political pundits, and newspaper writers. I was excited to learning the ins and outs of blogging and became even more excited, "stoked" if you will, when the cogs in my head (which I had planned would shut down for two months) started to turn and I was thinking of all the projects my students could do. Blogging about the American Revolution, commenting on the upcoming test, maintaining contact during CST time, possibly assigning a book to read (ha). The possibilities are endless. Now, if only we had enough computers to make sure that students could respond.

I had the same feeling about getting here today. Only as the teacher I was thinking "Do I have anything useful left to teach three weeks into June?" But alas it was the airconditioning that got me here. I knew that it would be cheaper to enjoy the airconditioning here then to start the houehold chores...

Do you have enough computers in the classroom to have students respond in pairs or in a small group? At my level, 4th grade, they love to respond together to anything.
