Text Edit, an OSX application could be used to teach reading and writing. The idea would be to use an LCD projector and then to group write with students. As the writing happens students learn about sounding out words. A nice feature of Mac OSX Leopard is to get the computer to speak the text. The voice setting of Alex is the most realistic. To get the computer to start speaking it is helpful to set a shortcut key in the Speech area of preferences. Open System Preferences and select Speech. You will see some settings there. Then check the radio box for Speak Selected Text when the key is pressed. Then click on Set Key. Enter your key combination. I use Command Option S. Then whenever you want the computer to speak text in almost any situation, just highlight the text you want spoken and press command option S. This is a toggle. If you press Command Option S again it will stop speaking.
