Choosing Well
Tuesday, March 18th, 2008
Contrary to popular belief the Amish do not eschew all technological advances since roughly 1800. They pick and choose carefully what they will and will not use according to a carefully defined set of guidelines. I find their attitude about technology healthy, and I think we all would do better to think more about the helpfulness and usefulness of technology that is constantly being pushed in our direction.
Sure it's cool, but is it helpful?
This is the first question I ask myself when deciding about adopting a new bit of hardware or a new piece of software designed to make my life easier. This question is why I do not yet own an iPhone or a blackberry and, why I don't have a Twitter account. This question is why I like Geocaching, Moodle, and podcasting as well.
This blog will seek to define best practices for your adoption of hardware and software by examining these new technologies with a (jaundiced) eye for utility in the classroom.
I welcome your input as we traverse the decidedly nebulous field of technology in education.

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008 @ 11:58 AMI like your thinking, Daniel. I'm a self-pronounced techno-geek, yet I don't own an iPhone, Blackberry, or Twitter account either. Haven't seen the need, and don't really want them. But when something cool comes along that I can really use both as an educator and personally, I'm all over it! I look forward to reading your blog.
