Outstanding Fines at Elementary Schools
Friday, August 27th, 2010

Middle schools are running into many students from the elementary schools who still have outstanding fines or books. Most of the students say they have taken care of this so we need the elementary school librarians to update their records on these students who are now 6th and 7th graders.

Unitl the fines are resolved, students will not receive a locker or textbooks. This clearance from the elementary schools be all new this year due to new system.

This is something "new" we will need to address to ensure consistency district wide between the elementary schools and the middle schools. It will be addressed at our Library Committee Meeting, however, please post your ideas and input here so that we can take this information to the Committee.

Thanks and Welcome back !

I spoke with LInda from Valley View this morning due to this same problem. Unfortunately, I (and I assume none of the Elem Schools) don't have access to look up patrons from other schools. There should be a box on the patron status screen to "uncheck" to look up other patrons in the district. Linda was going to have to clear all of the misc. fines. I think for the end of this year as long as we all run the fine report and make sure everything is cleared that will eliminate it from being an issue again in the future.

It is really important that when we clear a student at our site we make sure their record is also cleared in Destiny.

I have a textbook check-out question. I have been trying to check out my textbooks but it is not working. I am in textbook circ and have been trying to follow the Destiny help directions but am obviously doing something wrong. I have checked the back office and am showing everything there okay (I think). Can someone send me the procedures??? Thank you

I'm finding that any student that has transferred out of the District is still in my Library system. I know we can't change anything on patrons so will the District take care of this?

I have a new student who had an outstanding library book from another school in our district. I received the book back and sent it to his old school. Does anyone know how to remove the loan from my records so that he doesn't show an overdue book?

Only the originating school can remove the fine. Either call the old school to tell them the book is on the way through inter-office mail so they can remove it now, or wait for the book to get to the school and get checked-in. You can go ahead and check out items to that student because you know he/she is cleared now.

No fines from Simi Elementary. No students at other sites with our books at present. If any students come up with our books in the future it's because they really do still owe me a book.

No fines from Santa Susana Elementary. All books were returned on time and fines paid at that time if applicable.

Park View has two students on file, one for Madera Elementary and one for Berylwood Elementary, that have lost books and have not paid for them. I wasn't on planning on just ignoring them, but if I should, let me know. I have made other students in the school pay fines to have their library privileges reinstated.

I am trying to run a run a report showing the barcode numbers that have not been used for textbooks. Everything I have tried shows that the bc's do not match bc symbolology set up in the site configuration. Is there something that the elementary schools can get that shows procedures and what we can and can not do in textbooks? We didn't have textbook training and I keep having questions that come up.

The textbooks are a district-wide program, so for the new math, you will simply go to catalog and textbook search, then where to search you will select "All district" and type the name of the book int the box. Select the textbook that matches your title and then click on the Title, then "Add Copies." Top box should read "with barcodes" then select "Number of copies" and in the box next to it type in the number of copies. Then select "Next available barcode." Fill in the other boxes below that and then click on "Save copies." If it is a copy of any other textbook for schools that already were cataloging texts before Destiny, they are catalogued by site, so just search your own site and then click on the title, click on the sub-tab of "copies" and as you click on your copies which are available, checked out, and lost, etc. You can see what your highest barcode number is and then figure out the next available barcodes. Click on "Add copies" and then select "with barcodes" in the top box, "List of barcodes" in the next box and then next to it you will type in the barcode numbers you determined were next in your library (again, this only applies to the schools that were already barcoding textbooks and set-up ranges for each title previously). After entering each number, click on "Add" then fill out the boxes below and "Save Copies."

Debbie: I am able to get as far as all district. Then there is a restricted check and I can not click on anything.
REINA: Is there a possibility that the elem. schools had some textbook areas blocked that the middle and high schools had available?

Hmmm, you should have the same access as the secondary schools, but let me check with Andre and Jean....

No, I remember the barcode filters being removed because there was a problem with it.

It is probably a permissions thing then and something for the committee and Reina, Scott, and Andre in particular to decide if Elementary Schools will have access to add textbooks to the collection...

Are we still using this blog?
I have a question. I just noticed we are able to print AR labels.
Is there any way to print them on the Avery 5160 address labels.
I have no idea what the labels they give are.
Any ideas?
