As I sit in my hotel room looking out my window, I can't help but reflect a bit on how wonderful life is...

We are entering some challenging times as a nation. The economy is spiraling downward, young men and women are separated from loved ones as they protect our freedoms, families are choosing to tank their credit as their mortgages are greater than their home values, gas prices are nearing $4.00 a gallon...all of this just from today's morning paper.

Yet, life is wonderful. I look out my window and see downtown Oakland. Among the old, deteriorating buildings are some of the most beautiful, architecturally pleasing buildings I've seen recently. This struck me as a reminder that our perspective is our reality. I could focus on the buildings in desperate need of repair, leaving me with an impression of Oakland that would carry with me until I experience something to change this perspective. Or, I could focus on the wonderful examples of vision and community development that sit beneath me and demonstrate where the city is going.

Our perspective is our reality. We see what we choose to see, and what we choose to see is what we feel. We carry these attitudes into everything we represent.

Despite this morning's paper, I'm choosing to see past the challenges we face and appreciate the wonderful things I have to be thankful for in my life. My family, friends, health, and career...all wonderful. Each has its building or two that needs repair, but all filled with the most beautiful buildings imaginable.

So, before I leave Oakland tomorrow morning I plan to take a walk past one building in particular. It stands out from the rest as one that speaks of hope and beauty...it represents for this brief moment in time what is right with the world. I will walk past it and absorb as much as I can, for it will be what I choose to remember of Oakland until we meet again.

I know you have mentioned you didn't have an overwhelming desire to visit NYC. If you really want to see some great architecture, NYC is a great place.
