The Sound of Freedom
Wednesday, March 12th, 2008
This past weekend I was enjoying our local air show with family and friends. Each year we gather in a remote area of the county at what's known as the "Tree". Each family brings tents, chairs, drinks and various other items to enjoy the day while we observe the event from a distance.
The air show begins with the usual stuff...trick planes, parachutists, novelty aircraft, etc.
But then...the highlight of the show begins. The U.S. Navy's Blue Angels take to the sky.
The show is spectacular in every way imaginable. The precision and skill that these pilots demonstrate is amazing to say the least. At various points in the show, they seem to make their aircraft defy physics. I could go on and on about the show, but that's not my purpose.
We were positioned about three miles away from the air base where the event was taking place. This location provided us a private spot to BBQ and thoroughly enjoy the day with others. Yet, it also provided something unexpected.
Because we were away from the crowds, we were provided an opportunity for the pilots to give us something special. You see, each time the formation would split, the pilots would stray from the main focus of the show and travel our way.
As the pilots flew by, some would tip their wings as if to say "thank you" for watching. They would be so close that you could see the pilots helmet clearly.
That's when the sound of their F/A-18 Hornet aircraft would come thundering by...
Each time this happened, I couldn't help but reflect on how proud I am to be American. One gentleman next to me shouted proudly, "That's the sound of freedom!"
I couldn't agree more...sometimes we need a subtle reminder that freedom is something special, and that we all have a role in protecting it. Thank you Blue Angels!
