Imagine a myriad of 6th grade Orange Unified students exchanging ideas, opinions, and critiques on books they have just finished reading, using an engaging online setting! An interactive website, “The Book Browser – Bits and Bytes of Books,” designed by McPherson sixth graders, allows students to collect, edit and publish book recommendations for all to peruse. As an integral feature, the 6th grade production team adds audio segments via podcasts to highlight such hot topics as latest “best sellers,” “top twenty” all time book favorites,” and “meet the authors of today.” Additionally, the student designers create blogs, webinars, and Socratic based discussion boards to cultivate critical thinking in a “book club” atmosphere. One team creates marketing pieces to interest district 6th graders to join the discussion. Students develop a love for reading while developing the technology skills they need to be successful 21st century scholars.
